In May of this year, Mitsubishi announced a merger with Nissan, in which Nissan will take a 34% equity stake in the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MCC), representing $2.2 billion dollars for the brand. This alliance, carried out under the operations of Carlos Ghosn, chief executive and president of Nissan, aims to cut overhead costs that are associated with producing cars. Mitsubishi and Nissan have had an ongoing agreement for the past 5 years, and this new merger hopes to strengthen common grounds for both brands, including purchasing, common vehicle platforms, technology-sharing, joint plant utilization and growth markets. A recognized leader for the Japanese automotive industry, Nisan will now be the largest shareholder of the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and will directly contribute to Mitsubishi's brand identity, economic growth and procurement strategies. Both brands will continue to operate as separate dealerships, and while the image of Mitsubishi is shifting, the quality, levels of service and overall performance that customers have come to love will remain the same at Southside Mitsubishi.
Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance for 19 years now, which is a partnership between Nissan and French automaker Renault. Carlos Ghosn is the CEO of both companies, and has been looking to expand this alliance ever since. The merger with Mitsubishi marks the latest expansion of the Alliance model and comes at a time when both companies, Mitsubishi and Nissan, are looking for ways to improve long-term value, sustainability and development for their consumers.
Mitsubishi has an exciting lineup of cars and SUVs for the 2017 year, and Nissan has a wide display of trucks, electric cars and crossover models. With the new alliance, both brands will be able to discuss new concepts and potentially undergo shared development projects, which will be an excellent way to reduce operating costs for both brands, while developing new products that target both consumer markets on their own terms, while aiming to increase Mitsubishi's sales in Canada from 24,000 to 40,000 cars annually. Both brands will continue to produce unique, original vehicles at their own pace and on their own terms, while taking into account best practices and consumer needs across a shared platform.
